Paediatric Simulation Deteriorating Child October 2026

About this Program: 

Participants will focus on the recognition and management of the deteriorating child who has been admitted to the ward and deteriorates over a period of time. This program will also include training on human factors and communication to improve teamwork and clinical decision-making when managing a deteriorating child.  

Includes:

  • Pre reading  

  • Human factors and team communication training 

  • Skills stations 

  • Inter-professional simulations  

  • Debriefing and discussion to explore the clinical problems and the team performance

Intended audience: Nursing staff, Junior medical staff (JRMOs, Registrars)

Neonatal Difficult Airway (NEODAC) May 2026

About this Program: 

Facilitated by The Royal Children’s Hospital Simulation Program and the Department of Neonatal Medicine, this is a course for Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurses, General Paediatricians, Trainees, and anyone who may potentially be faced with the challenge of managing a difficult neonatal airway. 

Includes:  

  • Human factors impact on teamwork and airway management during stressful situations  

  • Tracheostomy masterclass 

  • Skills stations: 

    • Difficult airway algorithm and trolley set-up 
    • Video laryngoscopy  
    • Intubation and aides 
    • Mask ventilation, airway adjuncts, Neopuff, anaesthetic circuit 
  • Simulations and debrief sessions on management of the difficult airway in a neonate

Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS) Train the Trainer - March 2026

About: The RCH Simulation Team are facilitating education sessions on how to run a VEMS (Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation) session. VEMS can be used for communication or deteriorating patient training, and/or running through guidelines and protocols. This simulation education modality is easily facilitated by educators within their own departments and has been used to great effect in settings where time, space, and/or equipment are limited.

Includes:

  • Overview of the VEMS framework and educational principles

  • Guidance on how to plan, facilitate, and debrief a VEMS session

  • Practical examples of using VEMS for communication and clinical deterioration scenarios

  • Tips for adapting VEMS to local department needs and constraints

  • Access to sample templates and facilitator resources
