Neonatal Difficult Airway (NEODAC)
Course Description:
This simulation-based course, facilitated by The Royal Children’s Hospital Simulation Program and the Department of Neonatal Medicine, is designed to prepare clinicians to safely and effectively manage difficult neonatal airways. The course integrates clinical knowledge, hands-on skills training, and immersive simulation to address both the technical and non-technical challenges associated with neonatal airway emergencies.
Participants will engage in expert-led discussions on the impact of human factors on teamwork, communication, and decision-making during high-stress situations. Practical skills stations provide structured practice in the RCH Emergency Intubation Algorithm, resuscitation trolley set-up, airway equipment use—including video laryngoscopy—and neonatal ventilation techniques. Learning is consolidated through realistic simulation scenarios and facilitated debriefing, allowing participants to reflect on performance, enhance team coordination, and translate learning into clinical practice.
The course aims to improve confidence, promote consistent airway management approaches, and support optimal outcomes for neonates in critical situations.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for clinicians who may be required to manage or support neonatal airway emergencies, including:
- Neonatologists
- Neonatal Nurses
- General Paediatricians
- Medical Trainees
- Any healthcare professionals involved in neonatal resuscitation or airway management
Course Duration:
7 hours
