About this course: ‘In This Together’ was developed as part of the ABI Translation Project. This project aims to address evidence-practice gaps for children with brain injuries. The education package focuses on improving the consistency of care for children during their inpatient hospital stay, including the management of changes in consciousness and agitation.

Topics:

Through completing this education package, clinicians will learn about the following topics: 

1. Trauma-informed preventive care

·         What is trauma-informed preventive care?

·         Why is this approach important in the early stages following a child’s acquired brain injury?

·         What are some practical ways that this approach can be implemented with children and families following ABI?

2. Optimising transitions between care teams

·         What is a transition in care team?

·         How can clinicians support smooth transitions in care for children and families following ABI, particularly in the context of changes in consciousness and agitation?

3. Managing uncertainty following paediatric ABI

·         How can clinicians support families in managing uncertainty following their child’s ABI?

4. Understanding and managing agitation following paediatric ABI

·         What can agitation look like following ABI?

·         What strategies can be implemented to help manage a child’s agitation?

5. Supporting and empowering families

·         What are family meetings, and how can clinicians support families to prepare for a family meeting?

·         How can families advocate for their child, and themselves, following ABI?

Intended audience:  This resource has been designed for medical, allied health, and nursing clinicians working with children and adolescents with acquired brain injuries (ABIs) during inpatient hospital care.
