    CVAD STARS Masterclass series

    About:  

    The CVAD STARS Masterclass series is designed to provide contemporary education for all healthcare workers involved in the care of vascular access devices in paediatric patients. The series provides an opportunity for participants to engage in a shared learning experience with peers and experts in the field of vascular access. The first Masterclass for 2024 will focus on preventing Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI) and will include presentations from the RCH’s Infection Prevention and Control team, the Director of Quality and Improvement and the team from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.  The aim of the program is to empower participants to become local champions who will drive innovation and improvement in their area.

    The first CVAD STARS Masterclass for 2024 will be held on Thursday 6 June. We will offer both in person and online virtual attendance. Please register for joining instructions.  There is no registration fee.

    Gender Diversity Day

    About: The Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service and Education Hub are excited to bring all health professionals a day of education from experts to assist with providing supportive care for gender diverse children and young people.

    This engaging day will provide a range of speakers from the Gender Service, Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Orygen Trans and Gender Diverse Team, Transcend and Transgender Victoria and young people with lived experience. Presentations will include the value of peer support, the voice of the Trans, neurodiversity, speech pathology support, anti-conversion therapy laws, the latest research, working with families and a referral pathways panel.

    Paediatric Health Education for General Practitioners 2024

    About: This multifaceted online education program has been designed specifically for General Practitioners.  

    Includes: Monthly interactive webinars, recordings available, online chat forum, resources and feedback to support your practice in child and adolescent health and development. 

    Topics include: Early detection of cerebral palsy, assessment and management of tonsil and ear troubles in children, paediatric skin, gender diversity in children, headaches and migraine management in children, infant mental health and much more.  

    Intended audience: General Practitioners

    Cost: $250 + GST to access all course materials from February 2024 until February 2025 

    CPD Points: 10 hours of education activities towards your CPD log. Additional opportunities for reviewing performance through our unique platform and peer group discussion meetings.

    Unit 2: Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition & Dietetics

    About:  The Department of Nutrition and Food Services at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne began a Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics in 1997. This highly regarded course is exclusively for qualified dietitians, with the course content targeted to meet the training needs and learning outcomes for Paediatric Dietitians.

    Unit 2: Clinical Paediatric Dietetics 

    On successful completion of this unit participants will:

    - Be competent in the nutritional and dietary assessment of infants, children and adolescents with a range of acute and chronic diseases.

    - Have a detailed understanding of nutritional management and dietary therapy in children with acute and chronic diseases.

    - Be able to plan, implement and evaluate nutritional interventions, including dietary manipulation and artificial nutrition support measures.

    - Understand and apply current research findings to the care of paediatric patients.

    Intended audience:  All clinical roles

    Entry criteria: University entry criteria apply. Candidates must hold a graduate or postgraduate qualification in Dietetics. Successful completion of Unit 1 is required to proceed to Unit 2. However, Dietitians with 3+ years of experience in paediatric dietetics may apply to complete Unit 2 only if preferred.

    Evidence of qualifications and paediatric experience (if applicable) must be provided at time of registration via email to: nutrition.education@rch.org.au if you haven't previously participated in Unit 1.

    Unit 1 Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics

    The Department of Nutrition and Food Services at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne began a Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetics in 1997. This highly regarded course is exclusively for qualified dietitians, with the course content targeted to meet the training needs and learning outcomes for Paediatric Dietitians. 

    Unit 1 Topics

    General Paediatrics:

    • Growth and nutritional assessment
    • Breastfeeding and introduction of solids
    • Infant formula - new developments and manipulations to meet altered requirements
    • Toddler nutrition and fussy eating
    • Workshops on growth and energy requirements from infancy through to adolescents

    Specific Nutrition Problems:

    • Common childhood disorders requiring nutritional intervention such as growth faltering and iron deficiency
    • Management of common infant gastrointestinal disorders: constipation, colic, reflux and gastroenteritis.
    • Feeding difficulties including practical aspects of feeding children with a disability
    • Enteral feeding
    • Dietary management of IgE mediated allergy

    Community Nutrition Topics:

    • Paediatric public health issues e.g. childhood obesity

    Intended audience: University entry criteria apply. Candidates must hold a graduate or post graduate qualification in Dietetics. Evidence of qualifications must be provided. Once you have completed registration please email evidence of qualifications to: nutrition.education@rch.org.au

    Mode of delivery: Face-to-face only, no online option. The course will not be recorded.

    Course hours: 8.45am - 4.00pm daily. Note some days will have slightly altered hours.

    Paediatric Health Education MCHN 2023-24

    About: This online education program based on a Community of Practice, is designed specifically for Maternal and Child Health Nurses.

    Includes: Monthly interactive webinars, recordings available, online chat forum, resources and feedback to support your practice in early child health and development.

    Intended audience: Maternal and Child Health Nurses (including students), Community Nurses and Allied Health Professionals with an interest.

    Management of Adolescent Asthma

    About: There have been recent changes to recommendations for the management of asthma in adolescents. This module provides an overview of the new recommendations and strategies to support clinicians using them in practice.

    Intended audience: The module is designed for all clinicians seeing adolescents with asthma to support them in optimising patient care and education.

    Paediatric growth and growth charts

    About:  Children's growth is a very important marker of their overall health and development. Accurate growth assessment is one of the easiest ways to confirm the health and nutrition of children. This eLearning Module is designed to explain normal patterns of growth in childhood, best practices for measurement and monitoring of growth, practical use of growth charts that are recommended in Australia and recognition of patterns of growth that require further assessment and management.

    Intended audience:  Health professionals in Australia working with young children and their families e.g. Junior medical staff, maternal and child health nurses, nursing students, allied health students

    Feeding development - typical feeding development during early childhood

    About: During the first few weeks to months of life, feeding gradually changes from a reflexive to learnt behaviour. Typical feeding development refers to a pattern and progression of feeding skills and behaviours that are accepted as normal for the age and developmental stage of a child. This eLearning Module is designed to explain the features of typical feeding development at different ages and stages of early childhood. It explores the different domains of feeding development (Medical, Nutrition and Feeding Skills [physical, oral motor, cognitive, sensory and motor, psychosocial]) and their complex interplay which should be considered during clinical assessment. Both child and caregiver have important roles and division of responsibilities in supporting feeding development.
